When dealing with a family member or friend that has a mental illness you may not know where to start. About 1 in 5 American adults will have a mental health condition in any given year, but only 41% of them will receive services. (source – NAMI) If mental illness is this prevalent in our country, why isn’t it discussed more often? After a recent experience with a good friend, it made me want to learn more and educate myself about mental illness. This quickly led me to the hard rock band, Nothing More, and their fantastic cause, through our mutual friends at On Tour Monthly.
Nothing More lead singer, Jonny Hawkins and his band are raising awareness to the issue of mental illness by bringing it to the forefront with their #iknowJenny tour campaign. At a young age, Jonny’s sister, Jenny was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and the purpose of #iknowJenny is to teach others that they should not be afraid to ask for help.
“One way or another mental health issues affect us all… As we bring this topic into the light of public discussion and apply ourselves to understanding, we will begin to build a world in which moments like the Germanwings plane crash become a thing of the past,” says Hawkins.
The band has teamed with such organizations as To Write Love on Her Arms, Bring Change 2 Mind, The International Bipolar Foundation, The Jed Foundation and Young Minds (UK) to encourage those suffering to seek out the help they need.
At some point in your life you might have your own “Jenny.” Don’t be afraid to ask for help or talk about your situation.
