Much has been made of singer-songwriter Daniel Markham’s prolific release pace, putting out five records in the last four years, but what we found most impressive about his session was his ability to take the old and make it truly new. Markham took Bing Crosby’s world-renowned pop song, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” and turned it into a lonesome country tune, but since he’s not a country singer, the flip in style is even more remarkable.
The loneliness of the track, which houses a single reverberating guitar and vocal, actually makes more sense countrified, picturing a slow-rolling cowboy laying under the stars, yearning for home. By the time Markham cranks out the haunting guitar lead in the middle of the tune we are hopelessly, wantonly hooked.
